Zion National Park in Utah, USA is one of the most popular and famous reserves in the country. There is plenty to do and see, so we had a hard time deciding what to include in the list. However the choices had been made and we invite you to look through these ten sections, that are filled with mesmerizing pictures made in this glorious natural wonder.

10. Drive Highway 9

A 23 km (14 mi) long section runs through the heart of Zion and provides one of the most scenic rides of a lifetime. The highway passes the Zion Human History Museum, canyons, the Virgin River, a narrow tunnel, carved into the mountain, and finally ends at Mount Carmel Junction.

Why to go there?

The highway connects Zion with the rest of Utah. It provides numerous panoramic and beautiful views, so even if you are just passing by, the trip will be worth your time.

9. Stargazing

National parks are the best places in the USA to observe the night sky. Low light pollution, which is unavoidable in the cities, and clear sky are the most important things to the stargazers. Zion’s administration even has installed special lights in the information centers and other buildings, that are directed downwards.

When to go there?

In summer, when rangers and volunteers arrange astronomy lessons and set up the telescopes for the visitors to view the stars and planets.

8. Kanarra Creek

This little canyon is one of the best destinations in Zion for couple of reasons. First of all it is truly beautiful. Secondly, it is easily accessible from the highway, so the visitors can simply make a stop for a day trip and go see the site. Photographers also love the site for numerous photogenic corners and sections.

How to get there?

By car – from Springdale take Highway 9 to Kanarraville. You can park your car at Town Hall and then walk to the hiker’s gate where the trail begins.

7. Subway

Found in the Great West Canyon, the Subway is a stunning natural section found in the Left Fork of North Creek. There are two routes that lead to the Subway. Both are not easy though. The more strenuous hike however rewards with spectacular sites and an opportunity to freshen up in the Subway’s pools. Since the site is very popular, the tourists have to make reservations before going.

How to get there?

Get to the Left Fork Trailhead by car or park’s shuttle. Hike from there.

6. The Narrows

The site is considered to provide one of the best hiking trails in the whole park! The gorge stretches for 26 km (16 mi) and at times is 6 m (20 ft) wide, while the cliffs reach 610 m (2000 ft) height. It also features the Virgin River, that is quite shallow, therefore the hikers can wade it.

When to go there?

Spring and summer are the best seasons to hike the Narrows, since the water levels are low and it is warm. Meanwhile in autumn and winter the freezing water and high levels are too challenging.

5. Emerald Pools

Found in Zion Canyon, which provides numerous great hiking trails in unspoiled nature, these natural terraced pools add an extra beauty to this pristine reserve. Moreover, trekking in the area allows to explore a versatile landscape: the Zion Narrows, caves, tunnels, cliffs and rivers. Incidentally, Emerald Pools is among the most popular routes here.

Why to go there?

Great tourist facilities are found in the park. The best time to go there is spring and autumn – colorful foliage is stunning here in fall.

4. Canyoneering

Zion not only has numerous great hiking routes, but also quite a challenging surface for more experienced nature lovers, who are eager to climb those canyons and precipitous walls. Canyoneering allows to reach the most remote places and gorges, otherwise left unseen. Guides will teach the beginners and lead them through the adventure.

Visitors can choose versatile guided tours, that will suite their experience and taste.

3. Horseback Riding

Riding a horse in this wild land is a truly wonderful experience, allowing to explore places that are hard to reach. Tourists will visit the Three Patriarchs, the Beehives, iconic cactus gardens and will ride along the Virgin River. From the Sand Bench Trail, which ascends to a canyon, wonderful panoramic views to the Southern end of the park open.

Why to go there?

Visitors can choose between two options – a one hour ride and a 1/2 day trip. Book in advance and arrange a ride between March and October.

2. Angels Landing

This is the most exciting trail in Zion. A narrow route stretches throughout precipitous cliffs, where a deep abyss opens from both sides. Although it is quite dangerous and scary, no other trail can compete popularity with it. At the end of the path breathtaking views to a valley open.

Why to go there?

The hike is strenuous, but can be completed with no special equipment or much experience. It is open from April to November and can be reached by car or shuttle bus – so there is an easy and direct access.

1. Zion Canyon

A narrow, deep gorge in the western part of the park is the essential feature of the whole Zion. Its unspoiled wilderness is overwhelming as well as the views to a valley that open from the top of the canyon.

Why to go there?

It is the main landmark in the whole park, so visiting the canyon is a must. One can easily access the site, since a shuttle bus drives visitors to the main viewpoints.
