Wat Rong Khun – a Contemporary Sci-Fi Temple in Thailand

Wat Rong Khun, Chiang Rai, Thailand. A contemporary white Buddhist temple is very unusual. Designed by painter-architect Chalermchai Kositpipat, the sanctuary also looks like a piece of art.

The construction began in 1996 and will be finished only in 2070. However, it is already open for visiting. White color symbolizes Buddha’s purity. Traditional Thai architecture elements are mixed with the surreal objects.

The hands from Hell symbolizes desire. Notice a red middle fingernail. Inside the contemporary heroes – Batman, Superman, Predator, Neo from The Matrix – are represented in a Buddhist context. Fascinating!
